Whale and dolphin Conservation
Amongst the many conservation issues this planet faces, one of them is the the conservation of Whales and dolphins.
Whales and dolphins have been at risk for years, but are now at more of a risk than ever through the cause of pollution, whaling and the presence of free floating ''ghost nets''. Research has shown that they contract immune system disorders that have been brought on by many toxic pollutants being released into the ocean, aswell as this problem, whales and dolphins throughout the world have been diagnosed with tumors, skin conditions and birth defects.
Despite the fact that there has been a commercial whaling ban in place for approximately 20years, they are now at more risk than ever. Although the ban is in place, whaling still takes place today and the number of deaths is increasing yearly. In addition to this nearly 1,000 whales, porpoises and dolphins die each day as bycatch in fishing nets. This equals to 300,000 being killed each year. The term bycatch is when basically the whales, dolphins and porpoises which breathe air, get tangled in nets, hence being trapped under water and drowning.
The term ''scientific whaling'' was brought into place in Japan, in this sad case whale meat is sold on markets, due to a loop hole in IWC legistation the body has no power to over ride this.
Another sad problem amongst whales is them becoming 'beached' this is sometimes brought on when they gets stressed due to noise pollution in the ocean from ships and oil rigs for example, they try to flee the water hence getting beached. Sometimes they just get pushed up on to shore, this is often fatal as they dehydrate and die, they can also suffocate under their own body mass, or drown in high tides which cover their blow hole. In some case humans will try to save them but unfortunately this doesn't always work. Sometimes bad weather, navigational mistakes or being hunted also results in beached whales, it is so sad that this often leads to the untimely death of yet more species.
There are many things that can be done by humans to aid the conservation rather than make the problem worse, whale adoption is one option, and a great way of getting children involved in conservation. With Whale adoption the money it raises goes towards scientific research helping us to better understand the needs of the whales and the prevention of disease/illness and how this can be cured.
As stated previously, the greatest threat to whales, dolphins and porpoises is pollution. Some whale carcesses are so comtaminated with chemicals that they are classed as toxic waste. The chemicals are leading to shrinking numbers in the population. By purchasing biodegradable products that don't harm the enviroment, recycling, and supporting efforts to recycle can all help. By supporting this we are showing companies that produce biodegradable products that their efforts are worth while. Keeping dangerous items out of the ocean will also help, plastic, metal, glass, waste.... it is all harmful, incorrect disposal of these items is destroying the sea, killing our animals and damaging the enviroment. We all need to play our part!!!
