In the past two decades, around 70-75% of UK Butterfly Species' populations have declined.
Did you know that recently 5 UK butterfly species actually became extinct?
There are many reasons for such a significant loss of butterflies:-
- Habitats are being ruined by human activity (ie. land development, pollution, and the like)
- Butterflies respond very rapidly to the smallest and most subtle changes in temperature and humidity - indicating that climate change has become a problem. Only 10% of species, or maybe less than this, are actually adapting to climate change well enough to survive.
As David Attenborough pointed out this week, a good population of butterflies shows that the land is good. If you have an absense of butterflies, you need to be very concerned about the ecosystem. Attenborough recently created a £25m project, called 'Butterfly World'', to help try and reverse what is described as the ''silent natural disaster''.
Conservationists are due to set up 20 butterfly survival zones across the UK to try and encourage the creation of new colonies, and help relieve the suffering of many UK Species.
This is not a new problem, and this decline has been getting worse as years go on. Many efforts to save our butterflies have failed, and conservation has proved to be long and hard. We need a national effort, and an effort from everyone, in order to help our butterflies survive.
So if you see a butterfly this summer, don't kill it - admire it, as they may not be around for much longer...
