Question At what age is it best to buy a baby beardie

We have finally come too the decision to get a beardie for Lucy when Curli the chameleon gets her new home as we will have an empty tank.

What would you guys advise would be the best age too buy a beardie at as I was talking too a lady in the pet shop when I went to get waxies and she said that she had got one that was 4 weeks old but that it had died a week later.

Its not going to be for a while yet maybe a month to 6 weeks but what do you guys think.

Al

Congratulations on going to get a beardie, you won't regret it! A baby beardie should be at least 6 weeks old when you get it and you will find that most reputable sellers/breeders won't sell them before this.

Don't forget to post pics when you get him/her

Agree, a minimum age of 6 weeks. Just make sure that when you go to look for in a beardie.

If possible look closely at the beardie and see how alert it is. Ask the breeder/pet shop to feed the beardie to see if it's responsive to livefood, it might not be though if it has recently been feed. Check the beardie all over, look closely at the toes and the end of the tail to see if there is anything missing?? Unfortunately some babies to get nipped due to bullying or not being fed enough but if it looks in good health then their should'nt be a problem as a lot of us keepers do have beardies with missing bits.

Something else to look out for is weight, personally i like a beardie that has a tummy rather than a skinny look.

Basically you want a beardie that looks alert and very active, eyes open, no signs of bone deformity or weakness.

One way i test babies is to hold them in the palm of your hand and gently with your finger place it under there chin, lift them up so there front legs are straight and stood up. Then let go! if they are still standing and the head is still up than great! if they collapse then there could be a problem so don't buy!.

Make sure you post some pics when you get your new addition!!.

I know lots of people might complain about my choice, but... Is it your first beardie? Because if inexperienced it would be easier to care for one at about 2-3 months. This is because at 6 weeks they will usually have to be every day and at the the 2-3 month mark they will need feeding approximately every 2nd day. Hope this helps, whichever way you go, good luck with your new Bearded dragon!

Josh

Please don't take this the wrong way Josh But we tend to feed our beardies everyday on livefood and with the babies we tend to feed them 2-3 times a day until they turn more to greens/veggies and then it's once a day, everyday.
