Most everything I've ever had will eat f/t. Had a female tiger rattler that would eat thawed, then after hibernation would have to eat live a few times before going back to thawed for the rest of the year. Never would eat f/t right after hibernation though.

I feed live 'cause when I got my first snake.. that is all it knew. I still feed live... just never tried f/t. BUT not opposed to it. I don't ever leave my snakes unattended when I feed them and if the rat or mouse is a little fiesty, I give it a good thump to calm it down. So far been really lucky altho I have seen some snakes with some serious scars from bites or burns. ugh.

we only feed F/T, but there will always be a time where a live is needed.

OK well here is the American chiming in. I do both. I have 26 snakes and roughly 20 of them will readily take F/T prey. I have had some snakes that no matter what I do have never taken a F/T meal. Now I have kept snakes for well over 10 years and in that time have only had 2 snakes that refused F/T prey compleatly 1 I still have. Some of the other snakes I have do not take F/T on a consistant basis so I feed them live to get them to eat on a regular basis. Now I will say this, when I feed live I stay there to watch the prey and make sure the snake constricts on it corectly and the rat/mouse does not have the chance to chew on the snake. The only animal I have that I don't worry about is my rattler. He gets live (I admit I have never tried F/T with him) I open the top drop the prey in and stand there and watch till he strikes the mouse/rat pup and it colapses on the cage floor. I have recorded my burm killing a live rabbit and my rattler killing it's food. The point is I am there watching my animals with their food and can step in (except for the rattler, he's on his own). When things like the pic of the boa happen is when you put a rat in with a snake and then go to bed, and check on it in the morning to find a fat rat and an almost dead snake. I can be a responsible snake owner and still feed live prey. I just have to pay closer attention to my snakes at feeding time rather then dumping the mice or rats in with the snakes and going out to dinner. I know this was a lengthy post and sorry for being longwinded, but I would hate to be labeled a bad owner because I do feed live to some of my animals.
Chuck

I'm with you Chuck, and not just because i'm a American as well. I don't have a problem with people who feed live (i do think it's more common in the states though) and I think that as long as someone is willing to closely monitor the feeding, live can be just fine.
