Default Your food for snakes

How do you get your ffod for snakes?

Do you buy it from a petshop, online or breed your own?

We breed our own rats, which apart from our burmese python is all our snakes eat... So our food bill is £0!

We keep up a good enough production to have enough, we regulate what the rats feed on, so we know they are healthy etc, They are fresh and can also get a better size for feeding snakes, From petshops etc they tend to come in standard sizes that aren't always right for the snake....like buying shoes...sometimes you can be at an awkward size that size 3 is too small and size 4 too big, anyone with kids will probably know this.

Rats aren't smelly, its only when they aren't cleaned out they become smelly.Cheap to feed etc and another top point is they are extremely handy in non feeder emergencies! If you have a snake that refuses to feed for a long period of time and you have exhausted every other method and the snake is loosing weight, then you have live there *obviously only if needed to*

You dont need to worry about them defrosting in the post, taking up too much room in your freezer at once, expensive delivery charges etc.

So i recommend keeping and breeding your own.

I buy mine in bulk from my local rep shop (cheaper if bought in bulk), and I've got my own drawer in the freezer just for the frozen feeders So no problem with storage and no delivery charges!

I have been toying with the idea of breeding some African soft furred rats? As I hear they are less smelly than mice, but smaller than regular rats. I haven't looked into it fully yet, but it's something I'm thinking about.

We breed our own feeders. When you get 50 plus reptiles, all of differing sizes and needs, it gets expensive to buy in anything less than bulk, which gets expensive. Not to mention the only way to effectively buy in bulk is to buy F/T, and not everyone will eat F/T. Plus, breeding our own allows us to sell off the excess and bring in more money for the rescue.

having 7 snakes on different size food items it would probably be a good idea but we get ours from the shop who get their stock from a big supplier. as george works in the shop we get them as and when so they dont take up to much room in the freezer.

I sure do breed my own, and I love it! I think raising rats is a lot more enjoyable, and helps give a new side to reptile keeping.

Also helps that they come in so many colors, patterns and coat colors.

I absolutely love that I breed my own rats, it's my second hobby now.

I've also just gotten a trio of ASF rats, I'm hoping to breed many of those soon here too.

I buy mine from a rodent breeder and spend a lot on it...too much in fact. I don't want to breed my own because I enjoy my freedom lol...too much work!
