hi i have just been brought a 2 1/2 year old male hermann tortoise from a friend and have since found out that it country of origin is slovenia..
after doing some resurch i have fround this not to be good as to imports and torts getting sick from here?
please help as i dont want to break any rules and dont know what i should do?

not sure but i believe that its also on the cites list and you should have paperwork.
WE sell hermans in the shop but i dont deal with them but im sure that it is the hermans that must have paperwork and when its sold on has to be re registered with the new owner. Ive not known anyone have sick torts. But if your unsure contact DEFRA who can give you all the info you need on paperwork and even illnesses they may have

i ve had tortoises from there in the past and they are fine ,imported tortoises are prone to more sickness .if you are worried take it to a vet to be checked over , a health tortoise has bright eyes,pink tongue, clear nose, solid poo worm free,his shell should be smooth and hard,fed on a weeds diet ,put vitamins on his food weekly ,bath him in warm water twice a week and dont feed him dried tortoise pellets , dont use hay or straw for bedding it can cause problems. ice burge letuce is no good as it causes the tortoise to have the runs. if you need any advice just ask ,tortoiselady

there's a lot of stigma about Slovenian tortoises and you will read things on the net that will scare the crap outta you. But those things are designed to do just that.

That's not to say that captive bred tortoises aren't generally healthier, but the horror stories are quite few and far between these days so the best thing you can do is not get too caught up in what you read, love and take care of your new pet and everything will be fine (along with the odd vet checkup or two)

You must have a certificate for this tortoise. If you bought it from a friend did he have a cert for it. I have 4 hermanns ranging from 6 years to 1 year old. It sounds like a good idea at the time buying without a cert but once they get ill and you need a vet you realise how important they are. If you have nothing to hide get in touch with CITES. They are not always out to confiscate your pets. They can be very helpful and understanding. Give tortie a nice warm bath, keep tmp up and also probably worm him. It wont hurt if he hasnt got worms.
